NERCOMP EVENT
Instructional Design for Online Learning

Printer Friendly Version
|
What's the difference between preparing to teach an online course and preparing to teach in a face-to-face setting? A lot! Many who are new to online teaching are surprised at how much planning and writing is involved in advance of the actual course start date.
This hands-on workshop is a series of exercises intended for people who are newcomers to online course development. You will get the most out of this workshop if you come with a course in mind that you want to work on, or one that you are helping develop with faculty.
The workshop exercises orient participants to the ins and outs of online courses, including pedagogical decision-making, design, and authorship. Participants will also learn about frameworks for evaluating and improving the quality of an online course. This workshop is non-technical and software agnostic; we will not focus on the technical process of posting materials within a learning management system. Instead, we will concentrate on instructional design and on identifying the elements of a well designed online course. In addition to preparing participants for the demands of online course development, the workshop itself is a process that technology staff can adapt for use with faculty.
In 2006 workshop leader Gail Matthews-DeNatale received the Exemplary Course Award for "Learning About Learning Online," a six-week blended course that prepares faculty for online teaching. The exemplary course, which is also publicly available online, serves as the framework for this workshop
