Additional Information
Event Schedule:
8:00am – 9:00am Registration and Coffee
9:00am – 9:15am Welcome
9:15am - 10:00am Encouraging open URL access to library databases in Blackboard
Speaker: Terry Ballard, Automation Librarian, Quinnipiac College
In the Fall of 2005, it was noted that many faculty members were going through the process of scanning articles and adding them to their Blackboard pages as files. It was observed that the teachers were bypassing the millions of articles that were already available, fully licensed, from the library’s collection of web resources. To solve this problem, we began a campaign to show them how to link articles from the major databases into Blackboard – beginning with a web page, which can be found at http://faculty.quinnipiac.edu/libraries/tballard/bblinks.html . A talk was given at the monthly meeting of professors who were most interested in using technology in teaching, and we are working on making presentations at the department level. The main sticking point is the fact that off-campus users need to validate using one of two methods that we provide, but the library feels that this is something that every student and faculty member should be familiar with in any case.

We will show how Turnitin works with the Blackboard integration that is now available, and discuss how Turnitin has been used at our community college, including faculty feedback about its strengths and limitations.
11:00am - 12:00pm Spanning the Distance
Speakers:
Bonnie Mitchell, Director of Library Services, Framingham State College
Peg Snyder, Circulation Librarian, Framingham State College
Robin Robinson, Director Distance Education, Framingham State College
The resources and services of the Henry Whittemore Library support the academic programs and research needs of the Framingham State College community. The goal of the staff is to ensure that all library services are available to faculty and students, on and off campus, and that the library is part of the education framework. To understand the specific needs of the online community the library staff conducted a survey to identify what services are used, learn what faculty need, prioritize those needs, and decide how to best deliver the required services. The result was a project that places a librarian in a class discussion board. The steps we took to develop this plan and the status of the project is explained in this presentation.
