SUMMARY:LMS Migration - Strategies and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Is your school anticipating an LMS migration\, or in the midst of one? Here is an opportunity to learn from people who are now engaged in that process. Presenters will talk about the issues they've encountered and the strategies they have devised to cope with changes that are disruptive in both the positive and negative connotations of the word. We will look at this landscape primarily from the instructional design perspective\, but will not ignore the important matter of coordination with back-end administrators and other IT staff who are involved in the process.\nAreas to be covered include\n- How to prepare LMS users in advance of migration\n- Getting system administrators and instructional designers up to speed\n- Developing a workflow for course migration\n- Providing faculty support and training\n- Creating documentation and training materials\n- Keeping lines of communication open\n- Dealing with unanticipated problems\nPresentations will describe the migration experience at Brown University\, Tufts University and WPI. There will also be an open discussion session where attendees can ask questions and share their own experiences.\n\nThe premise of this event is simple. It is to provide guidance to people planning or executing an LMS migration. Speakers have been selected to represent different stages and aspect of migration\, as well as a variety of LMS platforms.\n\nEvent Schedule:\n8:00am – 9:00am Registration and Coffee \n\n9:00am Welcome and Introductions
\nSpeakers:\nEllen Healy\, Manager\, Learning Technologies\, Instructional Design and eTeaching Services\, Boston College\nPeter Hess\, Learning Technologies Administrator\, Boston College\n\n9:10 am – 10:20 am Migrating from Diverse (Satisfying) Legacy LMS Environments to a New (Satisfying) Coordinated CLE Environment at Tufts\nSpeaker: Gina Siesing\, Director of Educational & Scholarly Technology Services\, Tufts University\n\nTwo years ago\, stakeholders from across Tufts decided strategically to transition from multiple legacy platforms to a common\, Sakai-based platform for learning\, teaching\, and collaboration at the University. In order to enable effective use of that new platform\, we also determined it was essential to design a coordinated\, cross-organizational service and support model. One of our greatest challenges as we started the implementation and migration project was the daunting awareness that clients were consistently ~96% satisfied with the platform and service they already had\, but various drivers were causing us to make a disruptive change to this bread-and-butter service. This presentation will describe how diverse experts from across Tufts organizations joined forces to understand client needs and aspirations around the LMS changes; how we prepared constituents at each stage of the transition process; and how we’ve begun to reap benefits from the common platform and coordinated service model. The presentation will highlight our communication strategies; content migration approaches; associated training\, support\, and faculty development offerings; partnership with professional services vendor to support the transition; and unanticipated outcomes\, both challenging and inspiring.\n\n10:20am -10:30am Break\n\n10:30am – 11:40am New Kids on the Block: Migrating to Canvas\nSpeakers:\nJulie Lirot\, Senior Instructional Technologist\, Brown University\nPatricia Zudeck\, Manager of the Instructional Technology Group\, Brown University\n\nPrompted by the release of Blackboard 9\, Brown launched a learning management system assessment project in April of 2010 to evaluate the LMS products available on the higher ed market and make a recommendation to University sponsors as to which solution would best meet the needs of the campus community. With a project team that included key stakeholders from across the University we conducted surveys\, focus groups\, user interface studies\, an RFI process and onsite vendor demos. At the conclusion of the assessment\, the project team with the overwhelming approval of the key stakeholders\, recommended moving to Canvas by Instructure. The recommendation was accepted and the funds were allocated by the University to begin a phased implementation project of a cloud based\, vendor hosted instance of Canvas. A small group of early adopters used Canvas to teach this past Fall 2011 including our first and second year medical students who interfaced with Canvas on iPads. The implementation continued into the spring with over 60 classes being taught using Canvas.\nThis presentation will discuss the reasons we made the somewhat risky decision to move the entire campus to a solution developed by a fairly new player in the LMS market with a small client base. We will also describe our experience to date with Instructure client relations\, product development and support and what the Brown students and faculty are saying about Canvas. In addition\, you will get a first hand account of what it is like to teach with Canvas from one of Brown’s Senior Instructional Technologists that taught Advanced Spanish using Canvas while at the same time supporting other early adopters of the system.\n\n11:40pm – 12:30pm Lunch\n\n12:30pm – 1:40pm The Three C's of an LMS migration: Choice\, Chance\, Change\nSpeaker: Jes Caron\, Instructional Technology Specialist with the Academic Technology Center at Worcester Polytechnic Institute\n\nChoice: Like many other campuses\, WPI's LMS is swiftly approaching End of Life. Late last year we decided it was time for us to make a choice on a new LMS. The LMS field\, in some respects\, has become much wider over the past few years. How did WPI go about comparing these options? How it is we ended up remaining with Blackboard? A review of the process and some lessons learned will be presented.\n\nChance: Regardless of your LMS choice\, making a change always involves taking some chance and we have decided to take a chance on Blackboard 9.1. While the word chance implies some level of uncertainty there are ways to limit this. Here at WPI we decided on a yearlong pilot of Blackboard 9.1 in order to stagger our migration and limit implementation kinks. This pilot has had some successes and some difficulties. One of the difficulties here at WPI revolved around what it means to change…\n\nChange: From Blackboard to… Blackboard? In the Case of WPI's decision to stay with Blackboard part of the challenge is communicating the change. It is very easy to fall into the “I thought you said we were changing… Blackboard is just Blackboard\, right?” trap\, however the differences between Blackboard 8 and Blackboard 9.1 are significant. This has led to a campaign to communicate the change to campus which has become the main focus of our pilot year. We will be detailing our relaunch of Blackboard here on the WPI campus and sharing example materials that were created for our faculty.\n\n1:40pm - 1:50pm Break\n\n1:50pm - 3:00pm Panel Discussion on Training and Support\nPanelists: \nHelen Healy\, Manager of Learning Technologies\, Boston College\nTony Sindelar\, Instructional Designer\, Office of the Provost\, MGH Institute of Health Professions\nOthers\, to be announced\n\nPanelists from schools that have completed an LMS migration will discuss their approaches to user support and training\, and how their training programs dealt with resistance to change.\n\n3:00 End\n\n \nNERCOMP MEMBERS - LOGIN TO RECEIVE MEMBER PRICING OF $130
