Director of Academic, Administrative and Research Services
The Director of Academic, Administrative, and Research services is responsible for delivery of the large subset of IT services that target three focus areas: teaching and learning, research, and administration and business. The Director, reporting to the CIO, leads approximately twenty staff in Information Technology Services (ITS). The successful candidate ensures that ITS builds relationships with customers in these focus areas, understands and anticipates their needs, and delivers effective and efficient services and solutions.
The Director oversees the delivery of customer-facing IT services and solutions across all divisions of the University. The Teaching and Learning category includes service areas such as Learning Management Systems and Technology-Enhanced Spaces. The Research category includes service areas such as Research Computing and Advanced Applications. The Administrative and Business service category includes service areas such as Student Information Systems and Finance, HR and Procurement. The Director, having oversight of these 20+ service areas, has an interactive and visible role and stays well connected with the University’s needs for each.
Key to the services within these target areas are: customer engagement, requirements gathering, solution design, testing, communication, and customer satisfaction. The Director ensures that ITS’ efforts for the University in these target areas remain in alignment with strategic goals. Success of the services within the Director’s scope of responsibility is also dependent on other groups in ITS. The Director works with his/her management team and staff, as well as other directors to monitor and continuously improve collaboration, interaction and handoffs among ITS groups.
Overall responsibility for understanding and anticipating the University’s strategic and operational needs for service areas in scope and prioritizing their successful delivery with limited resources
Ensure that teaching and learning and research services are designed, aligned, and presented to faculty in a coordinated and comprehensive fashion
Work with the Project Portfolio Manager and the Associate CIO for Strategic Communications to institute campus advisory groups that collect project prioritization input for services within scope
Ensure that managerial direct reports and their staff successfully follow ITS’ ITIL service management implementation to capture and manage service requests, incidents, problems, and projects for services within scope
Work with the Service Portfolio Manager to ensure that all customer requests associated with the administrative and business, teaching and learning, and research service categories map to clearly defined service areas
Work with the Service Portfolio Manager and the Project Portfolio Manager to institute campus advisory groups that collect project prioritization input for services within scope
Maintain currency on service, application and data management trends and best practices
Serve as Service Owner for some or all services within scope; continuously review service strategy and improve service design
