GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Working within the Information Technology (IT) team, under the supervision of the Chief Information Officer, the Director of Networks and Systems oversees the College’s computer network, server, backup, communication and PC desktop support platforms and systems. The Director works with the CIO, the Information Technology team, and the College community to plan, implement, maintain and upgrade the College’s network and server hardware, telecommunication system, Linux and Windows based server environments, backup of critical data, disaster recovery protocols, PC desktop support and Help Desk. Provides direction and management of Network and Systems team. Identifies, proposes and implements appropriate policies and procedures as it relates to the above areas.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Network and Telecommunication Infrastructure Maintenance
Design and maintain network hardware infrastructure including copper and fiber cabling and distribution panels, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points in all College locations – including the Main Campus, the Downtown Center and the PN program at Smith Vocational High School in Northampton.
Continually assess and optimize network infrastructure to balance reliability, throughput, accessibility, scalability and security.
Oversee maintenance and upgrades to telecommunications services including telephone systems, handsets and voice mail services.
Negotiate and maintain vendor contracts and services for internet and telecommunications services to ensure the best balance of pricing and appropriate college services.
Participate in planning space renovation projects to ensure appropriate wired and wireless internet services as appropriate.
Monitor network logs and traffic to identify anomalies and potential network security breaches and takes appropriate steps to address
Maintain internal and external Domain Name System (DNS) records.
Manage DHCP services for wired and wireless networks.
Data Center and Server Platform Oversight
Oversee hardware and operating system standards, policies and procedures for maintaining all college servers, including standalone physical servers, storage arrays, virtualization hardware, virtual servers and cloud-based servers. Identifies, proposes and implements appropriate policies, standards and procedures.
Work with Physical Plant to ensure appropriate power and environmental services for data center including HVAC, generator power backup and fire suppression.
Oversee data center uninterruptable power supplies and ensure sufficient battery power to run critical services for at least 15-20 minutes without power.
Oversee Active Directory forest and domain structure and configuration standards including organizational units, group policy objects and account lifecycles. Create and implement account lifecycle policies as directed.
Oversee campus identity management services including LDAP and Active Directory services, user account creation, ACLs, Active Directory security groups, and account decommissioning.
Oversee maintenance of campus file server file structure and access control.
Oversee campus email services including distribution groups and spam filtering.
Backups and Disaster Recovery Planning and Testing
Oversee backup systems hardware, software and log monitoring to ensure timely and appropriate server OS and data backups for critical college servers.
Oversee disaster recovery planning, testing and documentation.
Conduct periodic exercises to assess readiness for disaster recovery.
PC Desktop Support and Help Desk Oversight
Oversee standards for PC desktop and laptop images including antivirus and campus alert software
Oversee desktop management tools for remote updating and patching of PC desktops and laptops
Oversee college print environment including working with Desktop Support Manager to design, implement and maintain a campus-wide print management system.
Oversee ticket maintenance and Help Desk services, ensuring tickets are triaged and worked in a timely fashion and assessing community satisfaction.
SUPERVISION PERFORMED:
This position manages a Server Systems Administrator, a Technical Specialist II and the PC Desktop support staff consisting of the PC Desktop Support Manager, a Systems Analyst I and a Computer Operator. This position is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these areas. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Campus and State policies and applicable employment laws and bargaining agreements. Supervisory responsibilities include: interviewing, recommending for hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; appropriately affirming or correcting employee conduct; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least five (5) years network and server technology support experience or Associate’s Degree in a related field and at least (7) years technology support experience.
At least 5 years building and supporting Windows and Linux based server systems
At least 5 years maintaining a medium to large network environment including switches and firewalls.
At least 5 years supporting PC and Mac desktops and laptops in a networked environment.
Solid understanding of information security standards and protocols.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Detail oriented organizational skills with a high degree of accuracy.
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
