Event Overview
An institution’s data resources are a unique and valuable asset. Institutional data provides the fact-based foundation that decision-makers need to formulate strategy and to plan for the future. However, data must be managed and maintained, if it is to form a trusted basis for decision making. How far along is your institution, in developing competence in data management, business intelligence, and data governance?
IBM defines data governance as, “a quality control discipline for adding new rigor and discipline to the process of managing, using, improving, and protecting organizational information.” They further state that, “Effective data governance can enhance the quality, availability and integrity of [an institution’s] data by fostering cross-organizational collaboration and structured policy-making.” 1 Despite the need for data governance, there are many organizational barriers to its effective execution. Frequently cited reasons for failure include lack of commitment from executive level management, competition for resources from other institutional priorities, and a lack of endorsement and participation from all stakeholders. According to a Gartner study, less than 10% of organizations will succeed in their first attempts at data governance.2 What successes or failures has your institution had in its efforts at data governance?
Attend this SIG to learn from experienced leaders. Come to participate in discussions and share your experiences. Learn how others have overcome institutional obstacles and have built successful programs for data governance and BI at their institutions.
