Event Overview
Higher education attorneys Phil Catanzano and Brenda Ulrich will discuss legal areas in which otherwise common issues are taking unusual twists in the COVID-era.
Intellectual Property Issues During a Pandemic: Brenda will address copyright issues that arise in the online classroom (TEACH Act), the virtual library (online reserves and digital lending), and the virtual campus. She will also discuss the broad range of software contracts that accompany the transition to online learning, and the particular issues such contracts can raise for higher education institutions.
Accommodating Disabilities During a Pandemic: Phil will focus on the technological issues that are arising in the context of disability accommodations and related institutional considerations. For example, Phil will discuss the heightened reliance on remote technology, the importance of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) compliance (for desktop and mobile users), and the challenges inherent in training faculty and staff to provide accessible content.
Learning Outcome
- Understanding when the “old rules” apply and when they don’t.
- Knowing where the greatest risk or exposure for your institution may lie in dealing with these issues.
- Making sure the lines of communication at your institution are open and operating – are the right people keeping you in the loop, and vice versa?
