What role would you like to play in organizing this workshop? I’m interested in organizing a workshop on this topic.
Intended Audience: faculty, instructional designers, technologists, librarians
Proposal:
As residential liberal arts colleges responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, instruction was moved online even at institutions that previously had rejected all forms of remote learning. Intrinsic to the mission of these schools is the strong sense of community fostered on campus. However, there are practices that can develop a similar sense of community in online courses. This series of three microlearning videos will address best practices that liberal arts colleges can follow for creating a community of inquiry (Garrison, 2007) through social, instructor, and cognitive presence. Each video will incorporate an engagement opportunity specific its topic. For the social presence video, we will model how to pause, reflect, and discuss using Panopto video comments. For the cognitive presence video, we will show how to use quizzing features to promote critical thinking, while the teaching presence video will be followed by a Q&A or Ask-Me-Anything chat session. By focusing on these three elements in their course designs, faculty will be able to strengthen students' connection with the course materials as well as with their classmates.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will learn the benefits of fostering a community of inquiry in an online course and how course design can achieve these results.
Participants will identify asynchronous and synchronous options for strengthening teaching, social, and cognitive presence in an online course.
Participants will discuss ideas for building a learning community in a future course.
