What role would you like to play in organizing this workshop? I’m interested in organizing a workshop on this topic.
Intended Audience: Instructional Designers, Faculty
Proposal:
This session examines how syllabi shape equitable learning environments in higher education. By creating syllabi that are welcoming, collaborative, representative, deconstructed, demystifying, and validating (Center for Urban Education), toward greater degrees of equity consciousness. The session draws on the work of Bensimon to de-center whiteness and reject colorblindness. The outcome is for participants to reimagine their syllabi as tools that reflect equity commitments, close gaps, and cultivate belonging.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
1. Understand how a syllabus reflects equity-mindedness, a view of students as learners and the efforts that the faculty member will make to support their success.
2. Learn and apply the six features of equity-minded syllabi: Welcoming, Creating a Partnership, Representing, Deconstructing, Demystifying, and Validating.
3. Learn and strategize together methods to infuse models of de-centering whiteness and the integration and convergence of identities to increase a sense of belonging.
Event Type: Online workshop - two 1.5 hour sessions (3 hours)
Track: Teaching & Learning (2024-25)
