What role would you like to play in organizing this workshop? I’m interested in organizing a workshop on this topic.
Intended Audience: Faculty, Instructional Design/Support Staff
Proposal:
I presented on this topic at the 2021 Mass Colleges Online Conference, and was encouraged by Allison Bunnell to submit this as a possible NERCOMP workshop. This was originally done as a webinar/presentation, but could definitely be adapted to a workshop format, depending on interest and need.
This session is based on an essay I wrote on this topic - https://medium.com/inspired-ideas-prek-12/design-for-your-most-vulnerable-student-df4c4320cb01
Learning Objectives:
LO 1
By examining specific examples, participants will learn equity-minded online learning design strategies including key components of a “Getting Started” section; simple design choices to write more effectively in digital environments; and the basics of accessibility in digital environments.
LO 2
Participants will explore equity-minded online teaching/facilitation strategies such as creating instructor presence in a digital space; applying principles of transparency to materials and activities; clearly communicating purpose; and leading with empathy.
LO 3
Participants will be guided through an exercise to think critically about their own current practices, to identify opportunities for implementing more equitable design choices for their specific context.
Event Type: Webinar/virtual

Additional Comments:
This session is probably most relevant as faculty go into the new semester/prepare their courses - I'd see this as more of a July or August offering (maybe August?), but the content is also relevant and actionable any time, if those months are full.
