Event Overview
Data is ubiquitous in our world, as details of our lives are collected, recorded, and used in a variety of ways. Through analysis, data provides information to protect individuals from credit card fraud or to make personalized film recommendations. Municipalities use data to predict hot spots of criminal activity, allowing police to take preventive actions. Governments use national data to benchmark economic performance.
Many institutions of higher education also capitalize on their available data resources. As is true in other facets of society, institutions of higher education put data to work in a variety of ways and for a variety of purposes. Through analysis, institutional data is used to target student recruitment efforts and to identify students at risk; it is used to optimize use of research space and to allocate other limited resources; it is used to spot trends and to provide timely information to administrators. Scientists increasingly share data, particularly in interdisciplinary research. Robust data management systems are needed to facilitate both data utilization and data sharing.
This workshop will showcase some of the ways that data is used proactively in higher education, to inform decisions, to guide actions, and to abet research. Attendees will see examples from different institutions, and they will learn about some of the analytical methods and techniques used. This workshop will allow ample time for Q & A and for group discussion with peers.
