Event Overview
Social presence is the ability for students to engage with their peers while making significant contributions to a course’s community of learning. In online and distance learning environments, web-conferencing platforms are often presented as panaceas for building community and establishing human connection. Features such as breakout rooms, chats, screen-sharing, whiteboards, and polling are believed to increase low participation and student engagement associated with online virtual meetings. However, as stand-alone tech solutions, these platforms and features do little to promote communication, collaboration, and active learning.
Moving beyond platform-specific features, this 45-minute workshop will focus on pedagogical strategies that teachers can implement to increase students’ cognitive engagement during live sessions and promote a sense of class community.
Learning Objectives
Participants in this session will:
- Understand the value of virtual meeting guidelines that uphold values of respect, diversity, and inclusion
- Devise active learning strategies that engage learners before, during, and after online meetings
- Anticipate common pitfalls when using web-conferencing features for student interaction and collaboration
This Series has 3 Sessions (please sign up for each individually). You are not required to attend all 3.

- February 18, 2021: Instructor-Generated Videos for Increasing Social Presence in the Online and HyFlex Learning Environments: Teaching and Instructional Design in the COVID Pandemic and Beyond
