Event Overview

Effective mediation of collaborative learning processes, such as writing, continues to be a challenge for faculty teaching today. When are students really collaborating, sharing meaningful dialogue and constructing group knowledge, as opposed to cooperating? Cooperation is the division of labor, whereas collaboration involves the creation of a shared concept by a group. Technologies such as wikis and social networking can help to make the process more overt, increasing the metacognition of the team members and the involvement of the instructor. This SIG will discuss the examination of these interactions, and how current technology can best support them. Does it matter if students use “Track Changes” and email or a web-based collaborative editing tool with versioning? Can the lessons learned in online/blended classrooms inform the face-to-face setting? How can well-tested classroom strategies for interactive group learning apprise the best use of technology?

Speakers will present current research, as well as case studies that include strategies and technology used.

Participants should bring a laptop to use for interactive activities.
