Event Overview
Copyright and fair use are complicated and nuanced at best. So many questions, so little certainty. Even experts may be familiar with fair use only as it applies to teaching or to textual works. But what about dimensions of technology and copyright law? How does copyright impact websites and code, images and graphic designs, 3D printing, and other technologies? What about copyright versus contracts? How do Creative Commons and open-source licenses work—or not work—with copyright? And what do instructional designers need to know about copyright amid the current wave of MOOCs and open educational resources? Do employers own the work created by staff? But what if you’re a contractor? This workshop will answer these questions and more, engaging in healthy dialogue with attendees and workshopping real-world scenarios. We will look at copyright and fair use from the perspective of creators and users alike.

Session Outcomes:
– To understand the essentials of copyright, fair use, and intellectual property laws and best practices in the context of technology and related services.
– To apply this new-found knowledge of copyright to realistic workplace scenarios.
– To anticipate and mitigate challenging copyright situations that may arise.
