Event Overview

This workshop is by and about emerging digital scholars, that is, undergraduate and graduate students. Grants centered on digital humanities often require student engagement and demonstrated impact on the curriculum. In addition, there are DH post-doc and post-bac positions being supported by such grants. What difference does the word “digital” make when students apply it as a lens to their research? How do undergraduate students create new partnerships with faculty and staff in digital humanities projects?

We will bring together emerging student scholars, librarians, technologists, and faculty to share experiences and explore digital scholarship issues, such as; technology and tools, developing practice, and the community/social aspects of the work. The workshop will include: lightning round student stories, librarians’ and technologists’ point of view, DH project posters, and a group Think Tank designed to investigate compelling questions. You’ll hear students talk about the rewards and challenges of incorporating digital methods in their work. Librarians and technologists will offer observations and tips on what works and what doesn’t in the DH collaborative mix. Sociological topics such as digital labor will be explored in the context of digital humanities.

Participants will leave the day knowing more about the what, why, and how students engage in digital humanities work, the kinds of scholarship that lends itself to digital investigations, the tools they may be using, and the role of various players across the campus, including the library.
