Event Overview
What is it about games that makes people lose so much time playing them? When the game gets difficult, what makes players keep trying even if they fail? And how can we take all that amazing persistence and engagement and replicate it in our classes? For the gamers, the non-gamers, and everyone in between, there is a lot we can learn about game elements, gamification, and game-based learning for our own applications. We’re going to explore, dissect, and evaluate what makes games engaging for players, the design and technologies that can support it, and apply what we have found to our own learning challenges.
By the end of our time together, active participants will be able to delineate the differences between gamification, game-based learning, and playful learning, brainstorm ideas to embrace game-based elements into their own classes and training, and leave with at least one idea they can use in their learning experiences immediately.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
- Categorize the differences between gamification, game-based learning, and playful learning in a variety of experiences.
- Extract common applications of game-based elements in common experiences to distill goals and outcomes associated with the uses.
- Discover applications of game-based elements for their own applications, including application to the design of learning and engagement opportunities
Note: These sessions will not be recorded. In order to be able to prioritize group connection and experience, participants will have the option to turn cameras and microphones on during the sessions.
