Event Overview
Everyone agrees by now that you can't get value from data you don't manage. The harder question, especially with AI in the mix, is which data actually matters and where to start on managing and using data for value creation. This session goes back to basics: what an organization is really for. We'll show why the usual approach (carving the institution into functions and bolting IT onto each one) leaves your most important data hidden. We add a different lens: an organization as people working together to deliver real results, like admitting a student, collecting tuition, or awarding a degree. Pin down those transactions, and you know exactly which data is essential. This provides a solid foundation for data modeling, data quality, integration, and a practical entry point into the DAMA-DMBOK. We'll close with a straight answer to a question everyone's asking: where AI genuinely helps, and where it can't be trusted to take responsibility in a human enterprise. You'll leave with a fresh way of seeing your organization, a clear picture of data management, and a path toward professional certification.

Session Outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
 - Distinguish the functionalist view of an organization from the construction (neo-humanist) view, and explain why functional decomposition leaves some of the most important enterprise data invisible.
 - Recognize why grounding data management in the enterprise's essentials (transactions) reveals which data matters most and where to begin.
 - Connect that grounding to concrete data-management practice as an on-ramp into the DAMA-DMBOK, and reason about where AI can and cannot be accountable in a human enterprise.
