Event Overview

“I left the unconference thinking that I've experienced the future.” - Reactions To My First 'Unconference', March 2012, Josh Kim (LMS unSIG attendee) Inside Higher Ed

Back by popular demand, the LMS unSIG!

Whether your campus has adopted an out-of-the-box learning management system (LMS), an open source solution or has developed a home-grown course management system (CMS), the challenges surrounding management, deployment, assessment, upgrades, training, support, security and integration with campus resources are universal. The LMS unSIG is an opportunity to network and problem-solve these common issues.

The format of this SIG

The unconference format empowers participants to craft the conference program and provides opportunities for them to become the presenters. Participants, rather than event organizers, determine the topics covered in session tracks. This means that the agenda is not predetermined months in advance, but instead will include the issues and concerns that are most significant to attendees on the day of the conference.

All registered attendees will have an opportunity to propose a topic, facilitate a discussion and contribute based on their own experience at the unconference.

Attendees may include anyone involved in:

* initiating an upgrade for an existing LMS
* selecting a new or replacement LMS
* implementing a new or replacement LMS
* ongoing management of an existing LMS
* developing best practices for training and support
* creating instructional design strategies
* developing SIS or other campus technical service and resource integrations
* course development, content management, course design and course administration Session topics will be determined the day of the event (read about the unconference format on our website http://edtechgroup.org/lmsunconference/).

General topics will include:

* initiating an upgrade for an existing LMS
* selecting a new or replacement LMS
* implementing a new or replacement LMS
* ongoing management of an existing LMS
* developing best practices for training and support
* creating instructional design strategies
* developing SIS or other campus technical service and resource integrations
* course development, content management, course design and course administration

Outcomes

The LMS Unconference SIG will address current trends in learning management systems. The likely outcomes will be individuals and decision makers from all colleges and universities going back to your organizations equipped with the motivation and knowledge to create and implement academic technology strategies with respect to learning management systems. While the specific outcomes will, by the nature of an unconference, be dependent upon each individual’s reasons for participating in the day’s events, they will most likely involve some of the following:

* Expand your knowledge of learning management systems
* Discover new approaches to content management, course delivery and LMS administration through presentations and open discussion
* Interact with colleagues who have experience with a variety of different learning management systems, many of whom have participated in LMS adoption, upgrade and implementation projects
* Share your experience or suggest a session topic in a session themes:
* Assessment & Adoption of an LMS
* Implementation, Course Design & Support
* Teaching & Learning (assessments, assignments, discussions, web 2.0, grading)
* IT (system management, enrollment, resource integration, provisioning, etc)
* Workshops, Seminars and Brown Bag lunches on training faculty and students on the LMS.
