Event Overview

Abstract:
Today’s rapid pace of technological change coupled with the disruptive changes facing higher education, requires a new type of IT organization, and with it, new approaches to leadership. This workshop will explore the skills and competencies required to lead in this new reality as well as strategies required to create and maintain high performing organizations.

Having received enthusiastic feedback while presenting these topics at the Educause 2015 Virtual conference, Ithaca College’s EdTech Day, and NERCOMP 2015 conference, this workshop is envisioned as an expanded opportunity to engage on these important issues. Participants will work through exercises and case studies to begin personal assessments and outline development approaches to strengthen themselves as leaders.

Session Description:
2015 is an exciting time in higher education technology. Today’s rapid, ever-morphing, and amoeba-esque pace of technological advances coupled with the disruptive changes facing higher education, require a new type of IT organization, and with it, new approaches to leadership. From defining and advocating for a comprehensive strategic technology vision, to building and leading a 'dream team' to propel innovation and adoption, it can be difficult to plan and execute the simplest of goals when the targets appear to be perpetually moving.

Join Senior IT Leaders from four different institutions in this interactive workshop to explore the skills and competencies required to lead in this new reality. Additionally we’ll delve into strategies required to create and maintain high performing organizations, and better understand changes facing higher education and implications for IT. Workshop participants will dialogue on competencies required to be an effective leader with the goal of viewing these exceptional requirements realistically and as 'doable', and the group will discuss recent management research and how it can be applied to leadership.

What are the skills and competencies required to lead new endeavors, to lead an organizational turnaround, or realignment? Responding to these opportunities requires a sophisticated set of leadership skills and competencies. However, many of our organizations are challenged with an inadequate number of managers who have been trained to lead in this new reality. Many of our management teams are comprised of star-performers, who have made it to a management role based on longevity, technical-expertise and institutional compensation models that force-aligns salary with direct reports.

The role of leadership is to provide vision and align direction while actively influencing, motivating and coaching others towards the continued and sustained development of a high performing organization. The best leaders are ones that can call on a particular set of skills that are appropriate for a given situation. Ultimately, the effective mastery of these critical leadership competencies can transform organizations and enable high-performing environments where individuals feel fruitful, fulfilled and engaged.

Throughout the workshop participants will be asked to respond to a variety of questions in order to help better frame the dialogue. The workshop will encourage interactivity by soliciting perspectives throughout the presentation and asking for insight regarding how participants would respond to the situations encountered within their own organizations. Regardless of session format, the goal is to engage the audience as much as practical. Many participants will have valuable insights and experiences regarding the transformational leadership experiences in their own careers. We want to leverage those insights to make the workshop more valuable to all.
