Event Overview
Learners depend on the quality of instructional media to form mental models and meaning. The unique affordances of rich media – multimedia, social media systems, and cloud-based Web tools – should be employed in learning because of their ability to provide cognitive advantages for learners as they apprehend new knowledge. Instructors, must be able to “teach beyond text” by using rich media and implementing these tools in instructionally sound ways.

In this workshop, participants will explore a variety of rich media and unpack the skills and proficiencies instructors need to use in an instructional context. Participants will practice constructing a set of performance standards and associated competency statements related to the effective use of rich media in teaching online. A shared document will be used so that all participants can review the work during and after the session.  Instructional designers, instructors, training managers, and academic administrators will find standards and competency statements useful for self-assessment and for professional development programs.

Session Outcomes:
- Identify and define the three basic sets of rich media communication.
- Articulate the value of rich media as modes of communication used for instructional purposes.
- Describe the value of performance standards and competency statements as a basis for professional development.

These outcomes are intended to prepare the participant to envision the use of the standards and competencies as a basis of their unique professional needs. Thus, the outcomes are not keyed to any specific discipline or academic position.
