Event Overview

VoIP is well-established, however higher ed institutions have adopted at varying rates. The age of the existing phone system and cost to entry can be significant. However, at some point, we have or will get into the world of VoIP. The lines between telecom and network have all but disappeared. 

This SIG will explore the following topics:

• Life before implementation
o Project Planning of the VoIP
o Preparing the network.
o Hybrid environment

• Implementation
o Station deployments
o Training users. How has "using the phone" now become a new level of support?

• Life after implementation
o Running traditional telecom and VoIP in parallel
o How has VoIP impacted the demands of network administrators?
o Handling maintenance and outsourcing support
o Implementing the bells and whistles. VoIP brings a lot more features. How have these been rolled out to the community? How have they been received?

The agenda will feature three speakers who have implemented VoIP in their environment. All three handled the implementations in different ways. In the afternoon, we will have a panel of network administrators talk about their experiences assuming VoIP responsibilities followed by a look at a live system led by one of the speakers.

Target Audience: Administrators or network admins who are considering a VoIP implementation or have just begun one.
