Event Overview
For many organisations, including those in higher education, data is a critical asset. To put it bluntly: no data => no business. This means that we have to take good care of our data and manage it as an asset. This is not a new discipline. Organizations have been doing it for decades. Yet, we see a trend that more and more organizations manage their data in a structured manner rather than relying on ad-hoc, reactive fire-fighting.
The DAMA Data Management Body of Knowledge is the international reference model for data management. It provides the structure and practices for data management by and for professionals. It is based on decades of experience and is (loosely) linked to scientific theories. The framework is based on essential data management disciplines such as data governance, data handling ethics, data quality management, and metadata management.
DAMA is the Data Management Association. DAMA has developed the Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) program.
In this training, we prepare participants for sitting the Data Management Fundamentals exam in the CDMP program.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the structure and content of the DAMA DMBOK.
- Prepare for the CDMP - data fundamentals exam
- Practice with the data management disciplines based on the DMBOK theory.

Bas van Gils
Bas is a driven and experienced consultant, trainer, and researcher. His is a managing partner at Strategy Alliance, which is also the home for his consulting activities. The last few years, he has helped professionals and organizations in realizing their digital aspirations: from strategy to realization. The core disciplines in his work are: (1) digital transformation, (2) enterprise architecture, and (3) data management. His motto is: in an increasingly digital world, you have to put the people first. He has worked in different industries, both in Europe and the United States as a teacher, coach and consultant. Bas also is a professor at Antwerp Management School, which is where his academic work is rooted. He
frequently publishes both academic and professional papers and books. He is a frequent speaker at conferences. He is also a board member at the Enterprise Engineering Institute and the DAMA- Netherlands chapter, where he contributes to the alignment of (scientific) theory and the world of practice.
It is increasingly apparent that data is one of the key assets for many organizations. The corollary is that the data management is becoming more and more important. Bas has helped many organizations in their journey to become more data driven. These projects cover a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from data management processes, AI strategy, organization structures (CDO Office) and training of
professionals. The key is to get just enough grip on data in order to create value with data. Recently, Bas has published his experiences in this field with the second edition of his book: Data Management – Gentle Introduction. This book covers both the theory and practice of this exciting field.
