Looking to explore or expand the use of the Open Educational Resources/Materials in your Library?
You’ve come to the right place! This session is by Librarians for Librarians (and instructional designers or faculty development staff) to learn how to gain buy-in from administration and start the OER planning process at your institution. This hands-on workshop will provide you with a toolkit to craft an OER strategy that works within your context.
Session Outcomes:
- Plan how to effectively advocate for OER initiatives with Library support at your campus.
- Identify and assemble intra-institutional teams to support OER initiatives.
- Use ongoing OER initiatives at other institutions to help develop and enhance your campus OER projects.

9:15am - 9:30am Session 1: OER in the Stars
An introductory discussion about open educational resources and examples from across the country of how Libraries have transformed their offerings or created new programs to support their communities.
9:30am - 10:00am Session 2: OER the Possibilities
Small group brainstorm (3-5) for concrete ways to introduce OER into your Library using a Google Sheet with tabs: tools for search and discovery, open access journals, digital curation, listservs, course resource replacements, and more! Have a conversation about the quality of materials and assessments. The group will develop and share an open resource list of their favorite organizations, journals, books, websites, content creators, and examples of materials.

How to champion for open resources and programs in your institution with a social justice frame at multiple levels, including accessibility and how to team up with accessibility departments/collaboration, economic status, and English Language Learners.

SWOT analysis description and working activity for participants to evaluate their own school’s OER environment. (ind, pair share, whole group)
2:00pm - 3:00pm Session 5: OER Pitches
Participants in small groups will work on developing a 2-3 minute focused pitch to advocate for an aspect of open educational resources at their institution. This could be to replace an existing Library resource with an OER, encourage a faculty member to try open source materials, or to apply for a grant. (pairs or small group, 3-4 examples to share with the whole group)

Connecting Massachusetts specific OER communities and professional development groups with the participants. If extra time, group discussion: What other resources do you think we need in the Boston Area? Solutions?

Esther Brandon
Esther Brandon is the Digital Literacy Specialist for undergraduate and graduate programs at Brandeis University. She is an enthusiastic seeker of new instructional technologies who is focused on best teaching practices. Esther has a B.A. in Anthropology and International & Global Studies and a Masters of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education for English Literature from Brandeis University. Before returning to higher ed, she taught in public schools K-12 focusing on using educational technology for instruction to support English Language Learners and students with moderate disabilities. Esther is an editor-at-large for the ACRL’s “DH+LIB Review”.
Lance Eaton
Lance Eaton is an instructional designer and faculty development specialist at Brandeis University, a doctoral student in UMASS Boston’s Higher Education program, and a part-time instructor at North Shore Community College and Southern New Hampshire University. His professional work focuses on improving student learning and experiences in online, hybrid, and traditional classrooms through faculty development focused on issues such as accessibility, universal design for learning, open educational resources, open pedagogy, and other inclusive practices that maximize student potential through traditional and newer pedagogies and technologies. His doctoral work focuses on the limitations of the academic publishing regime for scholars who rely on piracy practices to access research literature in order to publish new research. Lauren Slingluff
Lauren Slingluff is the Associate Dean at the University of Connecticut, overseeing the area of Library Administration and also leading the library’s strategic planning process. Her professional areas of interest include change management, open educational resources (OER), and data analysis. Currently, Lauren represents UConn on the Open Educational Resource Coordinating Council for the state of Connecticut, as well as serving on the OER Advisory Council for the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU). Previously, she served as the Associate Dean of Library Services at Wheaton College and was engaged in initiatives to support faculty in adoption of OER material in the classroom, growing the program up to 20% faculty adoption. Lauren was recognized by OpenStax as their “OpenStaxer” of the month in November ‘18 and regularly writes and presents on OER.

Parking Information:
Getting to the Campus Center Parking Garage…
From Massachusetts Avenue (after exiting from Route 116) At the second set of lights turn left onto Commonwealth Avenue – Boyden Gymnasium is on the corner of Commonwealth & Massachusetts Avenues. At the next set of lights turn right onto Campus Center Way and proceed up Campus Center Way – The entrance to the Campus Center Parking Garage is at the top of the hill on the right.
Please note - You need to take a ticket upon entering the parking garage. If there is no ticket to pull, you are not in the correct entrance to the parking garage.
Parking is available in the Campus Center Garage, pick up your parking pass at the registration desk and pay $6.50 when leaving.
Park on the 2nd floor of the parking garage and walk thru the hallway into the Student Center and go down to the first floor.
Accessiblity:
UMass-Amherst has accessible parking spaces and ramps from the parking garage into the Campus Center and elevators once you get into the building. Take the elevator to the lower level where the NERCOMP registration table will be set-up. There are also accessible rest rooms on the lower level.
