Event Overview
b.Cognition Labs' Leadership Empowerment and Acceleration Program (LEAP) is a 3-month Program that provides a unique development opportunity for established mid-career leaders who wish to thrive better in complex and disruptive environments. (Participants include but are not limited to Assistant Director, Director, Sr. Director, Associate University Librarian, Vice President, or Vice Provost.)
LEAP encourages participants to approach leadership as a set of contextual behaviors that empower groups instead of an expression of individual technical competence.
Course topics:
- Making difficult conversations meaningful and productive
- Negotiating and collaborating with stakeholders
- Discovering your strengths as a leader
- Gaining insights from failure
- Leading through change
- Inspiring teams
LEAP combines active learning, cutting-edge leadership theory, regular experimentation and reflection, insightful assessment, personalized coaching, and world-class leadership content from elite business schools.
Learning Outcomes
By completing this course, participants will have the opportunity to:
- Experiment with important new leadership behaviors.
- Apply insights and learnings within your work context.
- Model key leadership approaches, including collaboration, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
Participants should expect to participate regularly online during each week of the program. You must be able to commit up to five hours per week every week from September 23 to January 8. Each course week will include videos, discussions, graded assignments with feedback, small group discussions, and full-class meetings. Attendance in the weekly meetings is required.
Participants and faculty will meet face-to-face on September 24th and 25th, as well as January 7th and 9th, and participate in additional activities and networking opportunities. Attendees are expected to be present for all scheduled activities/sessions during the in-person portion of the workshop.
Attendance in both the online and face-to-face components of the program is required.
What sets LEAP apart from other leadership programs
LEAP is unique among leadership development programs for a few reasons:
1. LEAP emphasizes active learning--that is, making palpable changes in your actual work context. While we’ll introduce a variety of concepts to participants, the point isn’t to learn the concepts but to use the concepts to change how you interact with the people you lead and work with. To that end, we’ll often summarize key ideas rather than require you to read in-depth articles or book chapters (but you can do the latter if you like).
2. LEAP includes individualized developmental coaching and leadership assessments. In addition to the topics we cover each module, there will also be a separate, special, very interesting module, if you will: the module of you! You’ll get a lot of information about yourself as a leader, be helped to identify a meaningful change you want to make in your leadership, and be supported in removing the inner obstacles that may keep you from making that change.
3. LEAP is rooted in adult developmental theory, also known as constructive developmental psychology, or subject-object theory. Using this theory lets us design learning programs that are targeted for leaders at different stages of development.
4. LEAP targets a particular range of leadership -- leaders with several years of multi-level supervision under their belt -- ideally directors and above. It won’t be as useful for leaders at lower levels.
Testimonials from people who have done training through B. Cognition
“Through this experience, I’ve seen that I’m able to lead from my natural strengths. I’ve identified growth areas, but I realize that I don’t have to completely change who I am. I can lead from my strengths and still be an effective leader.”
—Sara Pike, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
“What I have taken away most is that there are different paths to leadership and different ways to express leadership. I’ve appreciated the diversity of conversation about what a leader can be.”
—Tess Grynoch, University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School
“I’ve discovered that my struggles as a leader are more universal struggles than I had thought. It gives me some comfort that these things are shared and we’re all going to keep working to become better leaders.”
—Kathleen Berry, University of Massachusetts Amherst
“I’ve never thought of myself as a person with authority or power, someone that other people even wanted to follow. It has become clear to me throughout this experience that people are more comfortable with my authority when I’m comfortable with it.”
—Heather Castle, University of New Hampshire
