Event Overview
In this highly interactive session, participants will use a reverse brainstorming technique to playfully delve into what makes a great course by examining its opposites. Using a constructivist framework, participants will use theories of learning, design, and motivation to reflect on their own educational experiences—the good, the bad, and the ugly. In small groups, we will collectively develop best practices for course design and delivery that meet students where they are and inspire meaningful learning.
Intended audiences include professors, instructional designers, faculty developers, academic affairs leaders, and anyone who supports dynamic and impactful curriculum and instruction at universities.
Session Outcomes:
Participants will:
- Discuss how poor learning design impacts students.
- Recommend best practices for planning and facilitating educational experiences in alignment with theories of learning, design, and motivation.

Joshua Luckens
Joshua Luckens is an Instructional Designer at the Teaching & Learning Collaborative at the Wentworth Institute of Technology. He partners with professors across the disciplines as an educational consultant, instructional coach, and faculty developer. In that capacity, he creates educational development opportunities for faculty by applying best practices from the scholarship of teaching and learning to course design and delivery.
Prior to working in faculty development, he was a learning designer and teacher trainer at a model diplomacy organization, developed curriculum and led study abroad programs across Latin America, and taught high school humanities and theatre. He holds an MA from Emerson College and a BA from Vassar College and served as a Fulbright Fellow in Colombia. | Luckens is passionate about pedagogy and strives to create learning experiences that spark curiosity and open pathways for creative transformation.

Carolyn Giroux
Carolyn is an instructional designer at Wentworth Institute of Technology with a background in educational research and curriculum design. She is interested in learning assessment, engineering design education, and educational technology. She has a PhD in educational studies from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a bachelor’s degree in individual studies from the University of Connecticut.
Sarah Walkowiak
Sarah Walkowiak is an Instructional Designer at Wentworth Institute of Technology with a wealth of experience in course design, development, delivery, and assessment in online, hybrid and face-to-face teaching environments. Sarah has over 15 years of experience in higher education and K-12 institutions in project lead, instructional design, faculty development, academic technology, and privacy roles.
Sarah has been involved with NERCOMP as a Professional Development Organizer, presenter, and mentor. Sarah earned a Bachelor of Science in Technical, Scientific, and Professional Communication at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a Master of Science in Professional Communication at Clark University, and a Certificate in Cybersecurity from Massachusetts Bay Community College. When she’s not keeping up with current academic technology, Sarah enjoys working with retro computers, primarily the Apple II and other 8-bit era machines or emulators.
