Event Overview
What do the emerging technologies of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality mean for education? This event will explore the state of the art in this field, examining the technologies as they actually work, how institutions have supported their usage, which pedagogies have surfaced, and where they all are likely to head in the future. We will combine presentation, interactive discussion, and hands-on experience with a variety of tools.

Session Outcomes:
- Participants will understand: how VR, AR, and MR technologies currently work; pedagogies for their use; the best support strategies.

Describes several academic projects that generate data to be used in VR/AR applications. Student participation, faculty research, and staff support will be highlighted as crucial components to these projects' workflows. Processes and assignments will be shown to directly impact on-campus VR/AR development, as well as scholarly learning methods.

Bryan Alexander
Bryan is a futurist specializing in higher education and technology. An internationally sought sought after speaker, he consults with universities, colleges, businesses, nonprofits, and government agencies in the United States and abroad. He created the multimedia Future of Education Observatory, including the Future Trends Forum videoconference and the Future Trends in Technology and Education report. Bryan publishes widely, including books like The New Digital Storytelling (Praeger, second edition) and Gearing Up for Learning Beyond K–12 (Solution Tree). His next title, Transforming the University in the Twenty-First Century: The Next Generation of Higher Education is forthcoming from Johns Hopkins University Press in 2019.
A former English literature faculty member, he has also served as an emerging technology director for a liberal education nonprofit, the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education. He completed his English language and literature PhD at the University of Michigan in 1997, with a dissertation on doppelgangers in Romantic-era fiction and poetry
Emory Craig
As Director of eLearning at The College of New Rochelle, Emory focuses on developing innovative technology initiatives and the integration of emerging technologies in the curriculum. A Frye Fellow and frequent keynote speaker, he has written and presented extensively at both national and international conferences on virtual and augmented reality developments and the impact of the digital revolution on contemporary culture. His current research is on the social and ethical implications of immersive technologies. In 2017, he co-authored the EDUCAUSE-ELI blog series: “VR and AR: Stepping into the New Frontier of Learning.”
He is the Cofounder and Partner at Digital Bodies, a consulting group assisting corporate, nonprofit and educational organizations in the implementation and use of immersive and wearable technologies. Digital Bodies is frequently cited as a must-read website for news and analysis of emerging technology developments. An active participant in the NYC startup community, he currently teaches a seminar on New Media and Society.
Maya Georgieva
Maya is an EdTech strategist, author, and speaker with more than 15 years of experience in higher education. Maya is the Director, Digital Learning at The New School, where she leads innovation in the design of technology-enhanced learning and VR, AR, and Mixed Reality initiatives. She works to engage the community and provide strategic leadership in creating an institutional culture and capacity for innovative design with emerging technologies. Maya works closely with the CIO, the Vice Provost for Curriculum and Learning, university academic groups and faculty in the design, development, management and evaluation of new digital learning initiatives across the five colleges Parsons School of Design, Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, the College of Performing Arts, The New School for Social Research and the Schools of Public Engagement.
At the XReality Center, a new research center at The New School with the purpose to advance the study and design of emerging technologies in the field of virtual, augmented, and mixed realities, Maya leads in the areas of Immersive Learning and Research.
She is the co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Digital Bodies, a global consulting group focusing on the impact of immersive VR/AR/MR and wearable technologies on education and society. Her work focus on digital learning, innovation in education, immersive learning, and storytelling. She a member of the Expert Panel for the New Media Consortium Horizon Report for Higher Education and serves on a number of educational and corporate learning boards. Maya has been instrumental in developing partnerships within and outside of higher education with startups, corporate and non-government organizations. Maya speaks frequently at national and international forums on innovation and the future of education and consults startups in this space.
Previously she was the Associate Director of the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning at the Stern School of Business, New York University. Maya provided strategic leadership to advance academic initiatives that transformed the teaching-learning environment. She has spearheaded the implementation of instructional design and technology, learning space design, blended and online learning, digital storytelling, mobile and social platforms and faculty development initiatives. Her work and projects focused on design thinking and the innovative use of immersive and mobile technology to foster higher levels of student engagement.
Maya is the recipient of the 2014 Campus Tech Education Futurist Award. In 2013, Maya’s Five Minutes of Fame talk on innovation in education is one of the most popular in the New Media Consortium series. In 2014, she delivered a second Five Minutes of Fame talk at NMC with a focus on the design of new learning experiences and the future of education. Her latest 2017 NMC talk is titled From Leonard to Google’s Tilt Brush in VR: The Birth of a New Medium. Her work has been featured at EDUCAUSE, ELI, New Media Consortium (NMC), Online Learning Consortium (OLC), SXSW, Campus Technology, EdMedia, GMAC, AACSB, Edutopia, Google and Intel Engage Education. In 2010 – 2011, in partnership with XanEdu Publishing Maya lead the iPad pilot initiative at Stern. The project was recognized with the Campus Technology Innovator Award for designing a student-centered iPad App.
Dmitry Korkin
Dr. Korkin is a Director of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and an Associate Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Before joining WPI in 2014, he was an Associate Professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the first Associate Director for Graduate Research at the Informatics Institute. He did his postdoctoral research at the University of California San Francisco and Rockefeller University and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of New Brunswick in Canada. Dr. Korkin is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award and the University of Missouri Junior Engineering Research Faculty of the Year award. His research interest are in bioinformatics and systems biology of complex diseases, computational genomics, machine learning, and biological visualization.
