What role would you like to play in organizing this workshop? I’d like to organize a workshop on this topic but I need assistance in how to do it.

Intended Audience: Faculty, Instructional Designers, Multimedia

Proposal:

At Post University, we have created a fictitious community, Torrancetown. Our Emergency Management and Homeland Security (EMH) students have to contend with many natural disasters and determine how best to approach, mitigate, and plan for recovery and prevention. These are real-life events that we have modified to take place in Torrancetown. The students are given opportunities to utilize the provided information, i.e., demographics, populations, supplies, etc., to determine how recovery will occur. We are constantly improving our scenarios to keep up with new and emerging technology, such as using augmented reality (AR) for a representation of a hurricane pathway where students can immerse themselves within the map. We have been working on creating an emotional connection to the scenario to make it more realistic and more than just words on a computer screen. We make sure that the students feel invested in the scenario so that they feel the pressure of making difficult choices and provide a rationale for those choices.

Learning Objectives:
Experiment with the content area to create scenarios specific to the student body.

Integrate techniques learned from the presentation to transform the student experience.

Compare and contrast best practices to suit the needs of the student body.

Analyze the presentation to provide feedback and collaborate on new ideas.

Explain how Torrancetown can be utilized for a different content area and student body.

Event Type: Online workshop - two 1.5 hour sessions (3 hours)

Track: Transforming the Student Experience

Additional Comments:
David, Joe, and I have created something unique and feel that others in the education sphere would benefit from this presentation. As education continues to reform, we must adapt and change how we present material to suit the needs of our students. Torrancetown is an excellent representation of how the material can be molded to ensure retention, excitement, and a desire to learn more and may lead to new experiences for all students instead of a particular program. We would love the opportunity to present and exhibit this practical, engaging student experience at Post University. Thank you for the consideration, and we hope to hear from you soon!
