What role would you like to play in organizing this workshop? I’m interested in organizing a workshop on this topic.

Intended Audience: Instructional Designers and Instructors

Proposal:

Can you identify the unique needs of different segments of learners in an asynchronous learning environment?

Asynchronous online coursework does not have regularly scheduled live sessions. In this modality for online learning, students can access all learning activities on their own schedule. Asynchronous online coursework can be challenging to design effectively with interactive tools for students’ collaboration in pair, group and whole class activities, since students in this online format wish to access all activities on their own time.

In this workshop, we will provide you with models and tools to develop UDL-informed asynchronous course activities for different segments of learners with diverse needs and expectations. In addition to providing models and tools for developing UDL-informed course activities, this workshop will help you to assess your current asynchronous course materials using a UDL-informed approach. Join us to learn how to design and facilitate collaborative student-centered learning activities that are compatible with all students’ unique schedules and learning engagement preferences.

Learning Objectives:
Learning Objectives:

• Understand UDL in the context of asynchronous learning
• Develop UDL-informed strategies for asynchronous course design
• Identify the unique needs of different segments of learners in an asynchronous learning environment
• Assess current course materials using a UDL-informed approach

Event Type: Online workshop - two 1.5 hour sessions (3 hours)

Track: Audiovisual and IT Services

Dates Not Available: No, but we prefer dates in the Spring to have adequate time to prepare our workshop

Additional Comments:
In the previous Fall workshop on Universal Design for Learning in the Synchronous Online Classroom, hosted by Christina Inge, many instructors and instructional designers asked specifically to learn about software tools and assessment models for asynchronous online contexts. Christina Inge and I noted the interest on this topic and felt it would be great to devote a considerable amount of time to delve into how UDL-based approaches apply to asynchronous online learning environments.
