Copilot Cowork is now generally available

After three months in preview status in the Frontier Firm program, Copilot Cowork has reached general availability.

What is Copilot Cowork?

Copilot Cowork is an agentic system designed for complex, long-running, multi-tool tasks. You define the work, and Cowork runs it end-to-end and returns a completed result, not just a draft or recommendation. It uses organizational context across M365 and connected systems to pull data while operating within existing M365 security, compliance, and governance controls.

How is Copilot Cowork licensed?

Copilot Cowork requires users to be licensed with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and requires usage-based billing through Copilot Credits.

Usage-based billing for Copilot Credits is determined by the task being run and the complexity of that task. Each task is calculated from four inputs: model use, context retrieval, tool calls, and runtime. Task types are identified in three main categories: Light Tasks, Medium Tasks, and Heavy Tasks. Work IQ API is now generally available

Work IQ is the intelligence system that connects Microsoft 365 Copilot to an organization’s internal M365 data, such as emails, chats, and documents. The latest news on the Work IQ API launch for general availability allows developers to use it to build custom AI agents outside the M365 Copilot ecosystem.

How is Work IQ API licensed?

Work IQ API usage is paid for through consumption-based charges using Copilot Credits, and no separate user license or SKU is required. You will pay Work IQ API charges directly when:

You build your own agent or app that calls the Work IQ APIs.
You use a third-party agent that grounds in your Microsoft 365 data through the Work IQ APIs.

Work IQ API consumption consists of two parts: a variable charge for query-style consumption, such as grounding, retrieval, and reasoning, and a static usage component for actions and tools invoked through Work IQ.

These Copilot Credit purchasing options apply: Pay-As-You-Go, Copilot Credits Capacity Packs, Copilot Credit Pre-Purchase Plan, or an Agent Pre-Purchase Plan.

Prerequisites for Agent365

To be eligible for Agent365, a user needs to be assigned one of the following two licensing solutions:

Microsoft 365 A3 + Microsoft Defender Suite Edu + Microsoft Purview Suite Edu

Planning for the Future?

Windows Server 2016 will reach end of life on January 12, 2027. Microsoft will be offering Extended Security Updates (ESUs), slated to become available in the fall of 2026. ESUs will allow Windows Server 2016 instances to receive critical security updates beyond the end-of-life date and for up to three years.

Legal Note:

NERCOMP negotiates the best prices and terms possible for its members and works with outside legal counsel to facilitate the arrangements between NERCOMP and the vendors. Any license or agreement accessed or entered into as a benefit of a Consortium Member’s NERCOMP membership is contingent on that institution remaining an active NERCOMP member for the full term of the license or agreement. For example, if a license agreement lasts for a 3 year term, then the Consortium Member must renew its annual NERCOMP membership at least twice to remain an active Consortium Member for the full 3 year term. Failure of a Consortium Member to timely renew its NERCOMP membership status during the term of the license or agreement may result in either a) termination of the license or agreement or b) loss of the discount pricing available exclusively to NERCOMP Consortium members.

Outside counsel conducts an initial legal review of licenses and agreements on behalf of NERCOMP but does not provide an individualized review on behalf of any particular member institution. Each member institution signs its contracts with vendors individually and the institution itself is liable for the rights and obligations therein. Members are strongly encouraged to have their contracts reviewed internally by their own counsel.

NERCOMP also negotiates separate agreements with individual vendors governing NERCOMP’s own relationship with the vendor. Although NERCOMP members are not parties to these agreements, NERCOMP will make copies of available to any member for review, upon request.
