Data Lift-Off: Launching a Business Intelligence Initiative

Rachael Coombes
Rachael works as a business intelligence specialist at Wellesley College. In her role, she supports the expanding practice of business intelligence analytics and reporting across the college by developing, delivering, and supporting strategic and ad hoc dashboards/reports used for analysis, decision-making, and operational reporting. Rachael also provides training and support to help administrative offices adopt new BI technologies. Before stepping into her current role in the summer of 2015, she was an administrative assistant in the office of the provost at Wellesley College for two years.
         
Rachael earned her BA in Linguistics and Psychology from Mount Holyoke College in 2012 and her MS in Data Analytics from Southern New Hampshire University in 2015. When she’s not working with data, Rachael enjoys rock climbing, reading finance blogs, and solving Sudoku puzzles.
 

Ian Rifkin
Ian is a knowledgeable IT manager with hands-on experience architecting and implementing elegant technology solutions and mindfully managing staff members while leading technology initiatives. In his current role as Brandeis University's Data Warehouse Architect, he orchestrates the people and technologies surrounding all aspects of the data warehouse environment for enterprise reporting and business intelligence; data integrations and feeds; and identity management. Ian's experience ranges from web front-end coding to applications and middleware as well as DevOps tasks, software release management, databases, BI visualization software, and other Web server technologies. He currently leads an 11-person team including business analysts, a PeopleSoft developer, an ETL Developer, and Web/middleware developers.


Peter Wiley
Peter has worked at Bowdoin College for ten years, serving the last four as Director of Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing. Peter has played an integral role in the implementation of Ellucian’s Operational Data Store (ODS) and the deployment and support of the accompanying reporting solution, IBM Cognos. Peter has served as a project manager within IT and now consults on data and reporting for departments implementing new databases (Workday and Slate most recently). Within the last 2 years, Bowdoin has begun the implementation of a dimensionally modeled, enterprise data warehouse, with Tableau as its BI tool, and Peter is the project lead. He is now assisting Bowdoin’s Vice President for Institutional Research, Analytics and Consulting to establish data governance. Peter earned his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in education from Harvard University.


Fei Wu
Fei is a business analyst who has a background of Software Engineering and diverse experiences in data analysis, marketing, and business management. He is currently working as a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst in the Data Warehouse team of Brandeis University. With his aim to provide simple and powerful BI solutions, he has developed data models and dashboards to improve the analyses of cross-silo data, BI portal, and data access security audit. He restructured and simplified the user and object schema of the BI software, which improves the application and the management of the BI software.
