Instructional Design for the Absolute Beginner

Edward O'Neil
Edward is an instructional designer & technologist, author, and consultant. At Stanford, University of Southern California, and Yale University, he worked on teaching and learning projects of all sizes: from degree programs, summer programs, and initiatives to projects, courses, and assignments.

For the last three years, Edward has served on the editorial committee for the 7 Things You Should Read About… series published by Educause Learning Initiative, and for the last two years, he has served on the advisory board for the New Media Consortium’s Horizon Report: Higher Education Edition. He presents frequently at the ELI and NERCOMP annual conferences, and he has published about learning in Educause Review.

Recent and forthcoming presentations and workshops include topics from ‘writing across media’ to ‘expert teaching online’ at institutions ranging from Barnard College and the University of North Carolina Winston-Salem to the Claremont Colleges.

Edward earned a B.A. in literature and theater from Yale (cum laude with distinction in both majors) and a Ph.D. from UCLA Film School. He was awarded two postdoctoral fellowships: a UCLA fellowship in social thought, and a Mellon Fellowship in social thought and multimedia at Brywn Mawr College. He has published a book on photography, as well as a book on screenwriting, as well as contributing to The Oxford History of World Cinema. He also makes videos on educational topics.

Edward blogs on medium.com and tweets under the handle @learningtech, and he co-hosts and engineers the Teach Better Podcast.
