AWS/NERCOMP Data Day sessions will bring together AWS experts and higher education professionals to explore the value of a modern data architecture for universities and colleges.
Throughout the day, the AWS team will walk participants through the value and principles of a cloud data strategy, covering strategic imperatives, enabling technological shifts, and key components of a solution architecture to promote flexibility for analytics, integration, and scalability to support ongoing data-driven innovation in higher education.

Getting Started: Modern Data Architectures for Higher Education
In this session, we’ll provide an overview of the shifting landscape of data requirements in higher education, and explore the conceptual and technical underpinnings of a modern data strategy that meets today’s needs while providing paths to a scalable future. Participants will learn about Amazon S3 data lakes, and their centrality to flexible data architectures that break down data silos and enable fast-cycle analytics.

In this session, we’ll explore some of the common reasons why higher education institutions have failed to see greater value from analytics investments, and allow participants to get hands-on experience with AWS Glue DataBrew, a powerful data profiling and data set creation tool.

Ad-Hoc Analytics: Speeding the Cycle Time for Data Transformation
In this session, we’ll explore how Amazon Athena and other ETL tools can connect to an institutional data lake to provide a simple, SQL-based method for data exploration across disparate data sets. Participants will get to use the tool in individual accounts, and discover first-hand how ad-hoc analytics can be accelerated to meet evolving stakeholder questions.

Enabling Data-Driven Decisions: Data as a Service with Consumable Visualizations
In this session, we’ll explore how a variety of tools can connect to the data lake, to provide flexibility for campuses using different visualization and business intelligence software across different parts of the institution. Additionally, participants will explore Amazon QuickSight and Amazon QuickSight Q—an AWS machine learning-powered reporting and dashboarding tool.

This session will provide an introduction to artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities that can be enabled from the data lake. We’ll explore Amazon SageMaker in the context of institutional challenges like retention management, course recommendations, and classroom scheduling.
