Event Overview
Want to improve virtual communication in all contexts? Come participate in interpreted interaction with us!
After two years of virtual conferencing/learning/interacting, it's important to focus on how to enhance engagement when online or hybrid. This advanced session explores virtual communication through the lens of interpreted interactions as a way to build new communication capacities in every situation.
Through shared experience, modeling, and discussion, we compare how Deaf and Hearing individuals experience virtual meetings both similarly and differently. This interactive session begins a dialogue around cultural aspects of communication, specifically how to foster inclusive communication by leveraging the full power of the virtual meeting tools at hand. Using examples, guiding questions, and small and large group discussions, we will explore the concepts of timing, pacing, turn-taking, visual indicators, captions, non-verbal signals (both human and technical), and backchannels as meaningful components to collaborative communication. With new awareness and specific practical guidance, participants will be more prepared to facilitate sessions and implement technology to support collaborative communication and serve the needs of everyone.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Experience interpreted interaction
2. Recognize and Describe differentials in perception and participation compared with ‘same
language’ interaction
3. Name 2-3 communication practices that support everyone in interpreted interaction
