Event Overview
Do you want to enhance your student's learning experience across your campus, both inside and outside the classroom? Join us to learn what Universal Design (UD) has to offer and how to apply the principles of UD to a variety of student interactions.

Universal Design (UD) principles were defined in the Disability Act in 2015 in response to the increasing diversity of college and university students. Since then, UD has been applied beyond disability contexts to education in various ways, beginning with course design and access to course materials and expanding to an overarching teaching philosophy called Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  To implement UDL across your campus, you must create a culture where UDL is embraced and visible in all aspects of the learning process.

“UDL training should focus on the people who actually put together the interactions for learners, and here we’re referring not only to designing courses but also to designing the interactions that students have with our application processes, registrar’s offices, tutoring services, and other touchpoints common to the higher education experience” (Tobin and Behling, 2018, p. 8).

We will explore the two main principles required for UDL:
 - User Level UDL: Services are designed to include as many students as possible without stigmatizing any population.
 - Customizable Level UDL: Adaptations can be made as necessary with minimum difficulty.
Beginning with a common baseline for understanding UDL, move beyond definitions in order to apply these two principles to build a culture of UDL across various student interactions!

Session Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:
 - Recognize the value of UDL in their university contexts.
 - Apply the two principles of UDL, both separately and as they intersect.
 - Workshop scenarios in which UDL can be utilized.
