Event Overview
A key step in data-driven decision-making is pairing institutional data with research questions to drive decisions and strategies. Achieving this level of business intelligence requires the use of tools – both automated and manual – to explore, make sense of, and draw conclusions from well-structured data.

During this session, we will first demonstrate applications, and underlying data sets, that can assist in decision-making. Building on this, attendees will work in groups to brainstorm questions that potentially could be answered by the tools and provided data. And finally, groups will have a hands-on opportunity to navigate the platforms to arrive at answers that would inform business practices.

We will also take a look at the domain of ethical use of data and hear from practitioners and researchers in the field who will share principles and best practices to ensure that data-driven decisions meet standards for privacy and transparency.

Session Outcomes:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
  - Describe and identify differences in automated (machine learning) and manual (dashboards) methods for analyzing data to drive decisions.
  - Interact with automated and manual tools for analyzing data.
  - Formulate research questions that will inform business decisions and analyze data to answer the question.
  - Consider ethical implications for using institutional data derived from student, faculty, and staff interactions to drive decisions.
