An Introduction to Designing Your Life - How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life (a Leadership Ecosystem Webinar)

Michael Cato
As Senior VP and Chief Information Officer, Michael leads Bowdoin College's Information Technology strategy and operations. He came to Bowdoin in early 2018 with 17 years of experience in Higher Education IT having served in roles at Vassar College, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Michael is an active facilitator, mentor, and presenter, with an emphasis on leadership development, organizational behavior, and addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion for strategic benefit among information professionals in Higher Education. He is currently a faculty member of the EDUCAUSE Institute Leadership Program in the US, a faculty member for the CAUDIT Leadership Institute in Australia, and he recently received his Designing Your Life (DYL) Facilitator certification after experiencing the benefits of the approaches in his leadership development work.

Michael is a member of the Society for Information Management (SIM) and the Information Technology Senior Management Forum (ITSMF), an EDUCAUSE Leading Change/Frye Fellow, an alum of Leadership North Carolina, and serves on the board for the American Institute for the Biological Sciences (AIBS) and the Northeast Computing Program (NERCOMP). He holds a B.S. in Zoology from Andrews University and an M.B.A. from Wake Forest University.


Joan Cheverie
Joan has had a breadth and depth of experiences throughout her career that have brought her to this point. Since 2018, she has been a leadership coach. After her DYL experience, she co-founded Fieldbrook Advising with her colleagues and was recently certified as a DYL facilitator. Her work focuses on coaching for leadership development, emotional intelligence, and career growth and transition. She sees her work as a catalyst for leaders at all levels to succeed with compassion, courage, wisdom, and clarity. She helps individuals understand who they are (and are becoming) as a leader and how to bring this awareness to every aspect of their lives.

Formerly, Joan was the Director, EDUCAUSE Institute Programs. In that capacity, she supported and promoted community collaboration by designing and facilitating professional learning programs to advance IT leadership in higher education, with a specific focus on those who lead, manage, and use information resources to shape strategic decisions. She facilitated programs, mentored participants, and wrote and spoke widely to members of this national association. Prior to that position, she served as a Policy Specialist for EDUCAUSE, which dealt with critical IT policy issues arising both in Washington, D.C., and on campus. Joan joined EDUCAUSE from Georgetown University where she was the Head of Copyright and Rights Management and held other senior management positions. She served as a Visiting Program Officer for the Coalition for Networked Information, and she was a 2008 Fellow from the Frye Leadership Institute (now the Leading Change Institute). She holds a Bachelor's degree from Mount Holyoke College, a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from The Catholic University of America, and a second Master's degree from Georgetown University in communication and technology. She edited the Professional Development Commons column in EDUCAUSE Review and she currently serves on the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal, portal: Libraries and the Academy.

Joan has a coaching certificate from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management, as well as a certificate in Conversational Intelligence from WBECS. She also holds a certificate - Inspiring Leadership through Emotional Intelligence - from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management.


Tanea Flanders
Tanea is a certified coach and organizational development leader. Through her company, Design You Coaching clients leverage her more than twenty years’ experience in transformational change, personal and professional development to cultivate the strong work culture they seek from within. In addition to traditional leadership and management development topics such as strategic planning, employee engagement, team building, and performance management, Design You Coaching also provides mindfulness practices, emotional intelligence, and work/behavior style assessments to promote greater insight, accountability, and sustainable action plans.

Tanea’s career as a workshop facilitator and coach began with her work as a Change Management Consultant for Accenture, Inc., supporting PeopleSoft implementations across industries including telecommunications, retail and government clients. Her work as an organizational development leader continued with roles in technology, media and entertainment, consumer products and education where she continues to serve as Executive Director for Columbia University’s Learning & Development team. Current Design You Coaching clients include leaders in marketing, law, theatre, beauty, and non-profit companies and reflects Tanea’s ability to support a diverse spectrum of leaders execute their company’s vision and strategic imperatives in alignment with their own.

In addition to her extensive work experience, Tanea earned her master’s degree in Social-Organizational Psychology from Columbia University, her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Lehigh University, and coaching certification from New York University. She holds master certifications in instructional design, facilitation, and leadership assessments with Langevin Learning Services, American Management Association (AMA), Development Dimensions Incorporated (DDI), and CPP. A recently certified Designing Your Life (DYL) program facilitator, Tanea also maintains assessment certifications for DiSC, 5 Behaviors, CPI 260, LIFO and 360o feedback assessments. She is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, National Leadership Honor Society; Psi Chi, International Honor Society in Psychology; and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., demonstrating her ongoing commitment to service, leadership, and empowerment.
