Event Overview

The Ancient Greek word “eureka” literally means “I have discovered (it).” In this SIG, we’ll be exploring the use of web-scale discovery tools (also known as discovery layers) in academic libraries. Discovery tools have evolved from the federated search engines of yesteryear to more sophisticated products that, at their best, facilitate that “eureka!” moment for researchers. Marshall Breeding, editor of Library Technology Guides, will provide an overview of the state of discovery. We’ll hear from several librarians whose institutions have implemented different discovery tools regarding selection, implementation, rollout, usability, and the pedagogical implications of these tools. The day will end with a facilitated discussion based upon presenters’ and attendees’ questions and experiences. This is a daylong program on web-scale discovery layers and tools in academic libraries. Among the presenters is Vermont's own John Holm of Norwich University. Several other librarians from New England colleges and universities that have implemented discovery tools (like WorldCat Local, EBSCO Discovery Service, Serials Solutions' Summon, and the open-source Blacklight) will discuss all aspects of the selection, implementation, and rollout process. Noted library technology expert Marshall Breeding will kick off the day with a keynote and lead us in a discussion to end the day.
