Driving Faculty Innovation with Non-Traditional Teaching Tools

7:30am – 9:00am   Registration and Coffee

9:00am – 9:15am   Introduction by Fairfield Provost

9:15am – 10:05am   Writing, Collaboration, and “Giving Away 60% of Your Grade
Speakers:
Jay Rozgonyi, Associate Vice Provost for Innovation & Effectiveness and Director of Learning Technologies, Fairfield University
Carol Ann Davis, Professor of English, Fairfield University

Many faculty are convinced that work must be graded to be meaningful to students, but our efforts show that low-stakes learning opportunities, which offer a full grade simply for the completion of work, create meaningful learning experiences.  This session will explore how two Fairfield faculty - one assigning traditional writing assignments and one applying the theory to online writing assignments - have found low-stakes writing to encourage the development of skills related to the synthesis and integration of difficult material.

10:05am - 11:05am   Fairfield University Faculty Panel: Non-Traditional Tools in My Classes
Moderated by: Jay Rozgonyi, Fairfield University
Panelists:
Silvia Marsans-Sakly, Assistant Professor, Fairfield University
Linda Roney, Assistant Professor and Director of the Undergraduate Nursing Program, Fairfield University
Chris Madden
Josh Elliott, Assistant Professor and Director of the Educational Technology Program, Fairfield University

While Fairfield University continues to use a traditional learning management system that many faculty take advantage of, instructors are also encouraged to explore - and are supported in their use of - more modern and non-traditional tools that can supplement or replace the less-nimble “one-size-fits-all” LMS modules.  In this panel presentation, four instructors (from Nursing, Education, History, and English Composition) will each describe and display the different tools they’ve used to creatively engage their students and create dynamic learning experiences in often quite unexpected ways.

11:15am – 12:05pm   Interacting with Interactive Fiction in Higher Education
Speaker:  Michael Hilborn, Associate Director of Academic Platforms and Development, Harvard University

From old-school text adventures to hypertext choose-your-own-adventures, interactive fiction can bring a rich realm of digital storytelling and narrative to the higher education classroom. In this session, we’ll learn what interactive fiction is, explore how interactive fiction is used to enhance the teaching and learning experience, and delve into two of the most popular tools used to generate interactive fiction: Twine 2.0 and Inform 7. We may even get a chance to collectively play a game together!

12:15pm – 1:15pm   Lunch

1:20pm – 2:10pm     Integrating Creativity in the Classroom
