Event Overview

Writing and playing Interactive Fiction can enhance the teaching and learning experience by bringing simple, fun, pedagogical games to any discipline. Game-based projects can be costly in terms of production. The time, skills, and resources needed to produce a quality project can be unwieldy or limit production to those who have the most advanced computing skills and access to high-end technology. By comparison, Interactive Fiction has a low cost-to-entry format and a low barrier entry for users with variable knowledge domains, programming skills, access to resources, and project scopes.

In this workshop, we’ll learn what Interactive Fiction is, then explore how this genre can be used to engage both instructors and learners. After spending some time playing a work of Interactive Fiction, teams will author their own game using the Inform 7 or Twine development systems, address principles of design and computational thinking, and construct rubrics and lesson plans.

Session Outcomes:
• Understand Interactive Fiction and its potential for teaching & learning;
• Create simple Interactive Fiction using tools such as Inform 7 and Twine;
• Develop a curriculum and/or rubric around Interactive Fiction
