Event Overview
As instructional designers in higher ed, sometimes it seems like 20% of what we do was in the ID textbook, but 80% is something else entirely: challenges which are organizational, institutional, financial, social, bureaucratic, etc.

This workshop is dedicated to two propositions:
  1. Our strategic thinking and soft skills are as important to our success as ID's in higher ed as our ID skills.
  2. We can improve our work lives by applying our ID and technology skills to our more institutional and bureaucratic challenges.

In this workshop, you will explore these issues through micro-presentations and facilitated small-group activities, and we'll gather and memorialize the takeaways using polling technology.

Topics will include:
  - Soft Skills: Working with Faculty; Helping and Interviewing as Professional Skills.
  - ID Beyond the Classroom: Backwards Design as a Way of Life, Seeing Clients and Colleagues as Learners (aka 'Covert ID); 'Walking the Walk.'
  - Organizational & Strategic Skills: Leading without Authority, Creating Predictability, Demonstrating Your Value-Add, and Setting Expectations.

(This workshop is a revision of "Instructional Design for Everybody." If you attended that workshop, you may benefit from coming again and meeting new people. Or you may find the content overly familiar.)

Session Outcomes:
  - Identify institutional and social challenges around providing instructional design services;
  - Identify strategies to leverage organizational, strategic, 'soft,' and instructional design skills to address these challenges;
  - Identify next steps for improving ID services in your specific context.
