Event Overview
The 2016 Horizon Report describes learning analytics as “an application of analytics aimed at learner profiling, a process of gathering and analyzing details of individual student interactions in online learning activities.” R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. Shiny is an open-source R package that makes it easy to build interactive web apps with R. Shiny user interfaces can be built entirely using R, or can be written in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for more flexibility. Shiny applications are “live,” with outputs that change instantly as users modify inputs.

In this webinar, we will show an example that leverages a Shiny app with LMS activity data to inform student’s learning. We will also demonstrate the back-end engine, generating interactive and dynamic visualizations of student online interaction data using R with RStudio Shiny, and discuss methods of automatically generating visualizations with a custom Ruby-based Canvas LTI.

Session Outcomes:
- Ability to describe the application of learning analytics
- Ability to analyze results by loading a sample dataset to a Shiny app
- Ability to create a simple Shiny app using sample code, and extend the skills by practicing with ‘real’ student learning activities data.
