Milking Google For All It Is Worth
7:30am – 9:00am Registration and Coffee
9:00am – 10:15am Advanced Use of Commonly Used Tools
Speaker: Ravi Ravishanker, CIO, WellesleyCollege
Google provides various tools--Documents, Spreadsheets, Forms, Sites and, most recently, the Drive--that are used by many of us. Each of these tools provide a rich set of features that many users are either not aware of and may find it confusing.
In this talk we will briefly provide a sample of some of the most exciting features that are available and generally useful for teaching and research, such as how to format the data in a spreadsheet to quickly create various charts; get dynamic data from the web such as stock prices and volumes into the spreadsheet with a simple formula; automatically extract a table on a website into a spreadsheet; design a custom form; email the contents of a submitted form to an arbitrary list of recipients; derive new information based on submitted forms automatically; and talk about a new experimental feature called the Fusion Tables that is geared towards Big Data analysis. We will also show how easy it is to create a Google Map from data stored in a spreadsheet, and wrap it up by showing how to pull all of these together into a Google Site. LTS staff will be happy to assist you if you decide to pursue any of these further.
