Event Overview
Are you a stressed-out student or working in wellness at your university and trying to find ways to reduce stress in your student population?

“The Spring 2013 edition of the National College Health Assessment, where the average age of those surveyed was 21 years, reported that almost half (46.3 percent) of all undergraduate students felt overwhelmed regarding their academic responsibilities. Almost half of the students surveyed reported that they have more than average or extreme stress.” 

This webinar identifies Mindfulness practices and Apps used in recent university research studies for stress/anxiety reduction. We will also discuss Mindfulness Intervention Practices (MIPs) that have been developed as mobile Apps for reporting potential physical and mental health benefits for students.

A host of resources will be shared and discussed including college/university websites (typically authorized as university counseling health/ wellness and mindfulness centers) suggesting web-based mindfulness Apps and non-app types of mindfulness practices offered in various digital formats (e.g. podcasts, audio files, videos, etc.). As well as additional stress management mindfulness resources, found at university libraries and accessible under student resource types of library guides.

Session Outcomes:
Participants will:
  - Understand mindfulness using the common Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) definition by Jon Kabat-Zinn.
  - Identify self-service types of mindfulness Apps used at three college/universities as resources.
  - List two mindfulness research-based studies using college-age students.
  - Recall the four steps of the STOP technique recommended by the University of Minnesota’s Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality and Healing.
