Mining Academic Analytics for Student Success on Any Budget

William Cowen
Will is a senior Ruby developer at Dartmouth, where he writes research and administrative applications for the college. In addition to stand-alone applications, his work focusses on bridging disparate systems with common, reusable and maintainable code, leveraging modern web API architecture.


David Demers
David is the Chief Information Officer for the University of Maine System overseeing the unified IT services organization supporting the entire system. Previously, he served as the CIO and VP for Enrollment, Marketing and Communication at SUNY Buffalo State as well as Chief Operating Officer for The American Women's College Online at Bay Path University where he managed the development of the innovative S.O.U.L. (Social Online Universal Learning) learning environment and as the Vice President for Academic and Administrative Technology.  He has focused his career on the effective use of technology to enhance teaching, learning and student success and has conducted research in the area of learning analytics and adaptive learning to promote student engagement and degree attainment. In prior roles, he has helped develop and deliver online programs at the University of Hartford (1999-2001), the University of Connecticut (2001-2005) and Sacred Heart University where he served as Director of Instructional Technology and Online Learning (2005-2009). Demers completed his B.S. and Ph.D. at the University of California at Riverside where he pursued research interests in the field of Cell and Molecular Biology.


Jing Qi
Jing presently serves as Learning Analytic and LMS Specialist at Dartmouth. Prior to joining the Dartmouth Information Technology and Consulting team, Dr. Qi had served as the Director of Institutional Research and Information Management at public institutions. She holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, and received her doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Vermont. Dr. Qi has been working in the field of institutional research and instructional technologies for many years. Using her solid background in computer science, extensive experience in statistics, and strong interest in data visualization, she integrates the core elements of learning analytics and educational technology in the exploration of Analytics in Instructions and Learning. Richard Silva
Rich is the Senior Director of Administrative Technology for The American Woman’s College at Bay Path University. Rich is the architect of Bay Path’s data warehouse infrastructure which combines SIS, LMS and CRM data sources to produce a consolidated view of student activity. Rich is the project leader for Bay Path’s predictive analytics development and implementation.

Rich began his higher education career at the Hartford Graduate Center, which would later become Rensselaer at Hartford. While at Rensselaer Rich designed and implemented one of the first data warehouses in higher education which was ultimately modelled by SCT for their initial Banner Data Warehouse option.

Rich’s interest in artificial intelligence was induced when he read his first Isaac Asimov novel as a child. Many years later Rich has been fortunate enough to marry his background in AI with his experience in data architecture to produce a data modelling and predictive analytics landscape at the American Woman’s College.


Amber Vaill
Amber is the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Becker College. She has been an educator since 1999, has worked in higher education since 2007, and has extensive experience in online education and instructional technologies. Prior to moving into the field of higher education, she served as a secondary- and middle-school level English and history classroom and online teacher. 

Throughout her career Amber has developed and implemented online faculty and student support and training programs, including the creation of online student orientation courses and online faculty development initiatives. Amber has published and presented at numerous national and regional conferences on topics including online faculty development, supporting students through a transition to a new learning management system, and the importance of online student orientations. 

Amber has been actively involved in NERCOMP since 2011 when she first presented at the Annual Conference. Since then she has served as a Professional Development Coordinator, organizing a number of PDOs including working with colleagues to launch the annual Canvas User Group. She has presented various talks and posters at the NERCOMP Annual Conference over the past few years, has served on the NERCOMP Annual Conference Program Committee since 2013, and has also served as a NERCOMP Social Media Strategist. She is serving as Chair of the 2018 NERCOMP Annual Conference. 

Amber holds a Ph.D. in Education with an e-Learning specialization from Northcentral University, an M.Ed. in History from Westfield State University, and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instructional Technology from Framingham State University.
