Event Overview

Libraries around the world are starting to implement Makerspaces. These are dedicated areas set aside for the physical creation of things and can vary greatly but include fabric art, wearable computing, electronics projects, robotics, 3D printing, as well as more traditional skills such as bookbinding or paper making. Most library makerspaces are currently focused on teaching and creating projects involving inexpensive computing power such as the $35 Raspberry Pi computer. We will be covering this as well as other technologies associated with getting a space like this up and running.

This NERCOMP workshop will be divided into two parts. The morning will feature an overview of makerspaces and the associated technologies that frequently go into them. This includes but is not limited to:
• Physical computing
• 3D Fabrication
• Laser cutters
• Lock picking
• Fabric art
• Wearable computing

The afternoon will be a hands on session in which participants will learn to use the Raspberry Pi computing platform. A number of projects will be shown and participants will get to experience downloading the operating system, hooking up peripheral devices and some basic terminal commands exposing them to the Linux environment. There will be lots of time for questions and hands on work.

10 Raspberry Pi computers will be loaned from the Burritt Library Makerspace for this workshop. Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own Raspberry Pis if they have them or any project they would like to share with the group.
