Event Overview
VMware’s acquisition by Broadcom has prompted major changes in licensing, pricing, and long-term strategy — leaving many institutions reassessing their virtualization roadmaps. This interactive panel brings together higher education peers and a NERCOMP vendor partner to share real-world perspectives on staying with VMware, transitioning to alternatives, and planning for infrastructure resilience. Rather than prescribing a single path, the session creates space for candid discussion about tradeoffs, migration complexity, financial implications, and strategic decision-making. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape and practical insights from institutions actively navigating these decisions.

This is a panel discussion that includes members and our partner, Connection.

Session Outcomes:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  -Evaluate the strategic, financial, and operational considerations of remaining with VMware versus transitioning to alternative platforms
 - Learn from peer institutions’ experiences, lessons learned, and migration planning approaches
 - Identify key factors to guide institutional decision-making around virtualization infrastructure
