Event Overview
What does virtual reality actually have to offer teaching and learning in 2017?  This session explores the full range of immersive VR uses currently under way in higher education, along with descriptions of potential deployments.  These include visualization, modeling, storytelling, collaboration, therapy, engagement, creative work, and building empathy.  We present on the current state of the art for these technologies, from high-end headgear to mixed reality setups, 360 degree image and video capture to Google Cardboard.  We investigate support strategies, including challenges, costs, departments involved, collaborative options, and the role of students.  We also investigate assessment techniques.  The session concludes by pointing to VR's limitations in education, its possible future directions, and participants’ take-aways for their home institutions.

Session Outcomes :
· An awareness of the pedagogical possibilities for virtual reality
· A sense of VR's technological status
· Strategies for supporting faculty and student use of VR
