Event Overview

Virtualization has been an obvious choice in the server world. Now virtualization is being promoted for the desktop. Does this really make sense or is it just another in a long line of "solutions" going back to network computing, thin client, and terminal services? Several colleges and universities are taking at least the first steps towards implementing a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) on their campuses. Given that students, faculty, staff, labs, classrooms, kiosks, and so on are all different kinds of desktops common at schools, there are many places where VDI might fit, but also places where it does not.

This SIG will focus on real-world implementations of VDI. The presenters will discuss what they have actually done at their schools and how well it did or did not work for them. What works? What doesn't? Are there any cost savings? Where do the benefits come in? What do students, faculty, and staff think about it? The stories they share will help all of us who are looking at this area of technology and trying to figure out how it may or may not fit in our institutions.

Objectives
----------------
Define what VDI technologies exist today and what their capabilities are and are not
Understand the server and other technical infrastructure needed to provide VDI
Awareness of tools or solutions available to make VDI easier to manage and implement
Understand where the "low hanging fruit" exists for VDI on a college campus
Assess whether or not VDI makes sense for your institution
Describe a pathway for implementation of a VDI pilot on your campus

THIS CLASS IS FILLED. REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.
