Women in Technology Leadership Series - Women at Work: Culture and Mind

8:00am – 10:00am Registration and Coffee

10:00am – 12:00pm Fear of Success
Speaker: Phoebe Schnitzer, Clinical Psychologist, Women’s Studies Research Center, Brandeis University

Her recent work on “Fear of Success” traces the evolution of achievement anxieties expressed originally by women in the 1960’s, then modified over the years and now, in recent data, pretty much absent! She describes this evolution as a function of our changing social context. The notion that women experienced an internal barrier to success has been overtaken in the research by a focus on actual barriers experienced by high-achieving women i.e. if self-promoting, are they perceived as too aggressive, and therefore unlikable and less likely to be promoted? There is also some study of ways women can negotiate and present themselves to mitigate such negative feedback.

12:00pm – 1:00pm Lunch

1:00pm – 3:00pm Bystander Awareness
Speaker: Patricia Deyton, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at the Simmons School of Management, and is the Director of the Center for Gender in Organizations, Simmons College

Patricia Deyton will lead the participants in a workshop on bystander awareness. Bystanders can play a crucial role when they witness unconscious biases or problematic comments and interactions occurring in the classroom or workplace. Come learn how you can speak up, make room for silenced voices, halt a painful escalation, and make a difference. The afternoon session will provide a valuable chance to practice in real time effective things that you can say and do in these potentially uncomfortable or difficult situations. Outcomes of the training include being able to identify and interpret a situation where help is needed, assuming personal responsibility, deciding upon appropriate response, and taking action.

3:00pm End
