Speaker: Heather Davis Lam, Associate Sales Operations Manager, Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Many student supervisors are concerned about coming up with tips, tricks and techniques to, “get the most,” out of their student workers. However, there’s an important question that needs to be asked from multiple perspectives – What’s in it for me? What are you, as a supervisor, going to gain from having this student employed in your department, and how are they going to benefit by coming to work for you? In this workshop, we will investigate this question in further detail, and discuss strategies for creating a mutually beneficial and productive work environment.

In education Information Technology support is a big need. Building a capable student workforce to meet this need can provide excellent customer service and technical support at a cost less than what comparable availability by full-time staff would require. At the University at Albany, the ITS HelpDesk uses student employees to support student and employee use of the applications, equipment, and infrastructure ITS provides. This session will detail how the student employees add value for us and summarize how we manage them from hiring and training through daily supervision and two-way reviews.
